3 Reasons Why You Should Set Goals for 2018

I am all about goal setting. I have been for my entire life.

I love visualizing what my year will look like. 2017 was the first year that I mapped out each month and I was able to stay organized when there was chaos. Now, I’m not perfect. Not all of my goals were met. But it gave me something to shoot for and gave me a way to track my progress so I knew where I was versus where I wanted to go.

I am a huge believer in writing things out. Not typing but actual pen to paper writing things out. There really is something that clicks in our brain when we see it on paper. It becomes real. If you haven’t done that before, I encourage you to try it for 2018!

Here’s an example of what my planner will look like…

I will have 1 blank 8X11 sheet of paper with 3-4 categories. Business, Finances, Fitness and Personal. I write out 3-4 main goals I want to accomplish in each category. So for example, in Finances: Pay off car, pay 15k off student loans, buy new kitchen appliances in cash. Then I will go through each of the major bullet points and figure out a realistic timeline. If I want my car paid off by April 2018, I will look at what trips we have January- April, what cyclical expenses that popped up last year during that time (like taxes, oil changes, car registration, etc.) and then go through and give each month an estimate of how many dollars I need to set aside to be on track.

Do this for each category. It’s a HUGE help!

Then each quarter I do check-ins. This helps me know if the goal I set was a little too hard or maybe a little too easy. I think check-ins are CRUCIAL for planning. In my experience, most people can write out their goals just fine but they lose pace by March and don’t pick up their planner until September then just say “screw it, I’ll wait until next year” to start over. DON’T LET THAT BE YOU!!

This is how I set my goals every year and there are 3 key reasons WHY I set goals every year. I hope these will encourage you to do the same

  1. Goals Help Me Focus

In a world full of distraction, focus is your best ally. I don’t know about you, but I have things I want to accomplish in life. I don’t know if you have realized it or not but life seems to go by faster and faster every year. If I don’t write out my goals and have focus on what I want to get done, 3 years will go by and suddenly I’m back at square one. This is why writing your goals out are SO important. Make it a priority this year and you will be amazed!

  1. Goals Give Me Motivation

When I set goals, it gets me motivated. It’s like that scene with the little choo-choo train that is going up the big hill and saying “I think I can, I think I can”. My inner cheerleader comes to fruition and I get excited for the future. Just think of how awesome it feels when you get something done that you have been wanting to get done for SO LONG. As you are reaching your goals throughout the year, it only gives you more motivation to keep going and finish the year strong!

  1. Goals Help Me Dream

I have always been a big dreamer. I don’t want to settle for an ordinary life. I am here for a short time, I want to do it big. I want to reach as many people as I can, share as much love and joy as I can and be a light to everyone I come in contact with.
When I set my goals every year, it helps me keep that spark alive. It’s so easy to get lost in the mundane tasks of life. My goals help me keep that “kid like” energy of wanting to do big things in life. This can be a difficult thing to do for some people. Up until about a year ago, I had forgotten how to dream like a child. Once you sit down and write out what you want to accomplish, it will fuel that little spark and then the spark keeps growing and you can practice how to use that imagination again. Learning to dream is a freeing experience. Let 2018 be the year you learn how to!

  1. I’ve never actually manage to set goals for myself due to laziness but starting now I will be setting goals. Like you said I don’t want to settle for an ordinary life either. I want to travel and meet new people, experience different cultures. We have so much potential to offer in the world and why should it be wasted in one area. We can create value in this world. Make a difference. I found that setting goals is a great way to measure my commitment and dedication. I think it’s a great way to reflect ourselves during the year! So great post!
